Otto Porter (DK: $6300 FD: $6000): Tonight’s must-haves all come from the Wizards-Bulls game in Chicago. In the game with the highest projected point total and lowest spread, the starters in this one are the most likely to play the entire game and put up big numbers. Otto Porter is tonight’s first must-have player, as we expect him to get plenty of opportunities tonight against the Bulls. The Bulls allow the 10th-most fantasy points per game to small forwards on the season, but this does not differentiate the games started by Tony Snell from those started by Nikola Mirotic, who is a worse defender. Porter is one of the safest plays on this slate as he scores his fantasy points in many ways, but he also has a high ceiling which he demonstrated on New Year’s Day with a 50-point showing. Additionally, Marcin Gortat is listed as questionable for the Wizards, but we think it is more likely that does not play after reading reports about his inability to bend his leg. Porter averages 8 additional fantasy points per game when Gortat does not play, so consider him a must-have who becomes an amazing pick if Gortat sits, particularly on Fanduel where he is priced lower than Draftkings.
John Wall (DK: $9400 FD: $9900): The next must-have from tonight’s Wizards-Bulls game is John Wall, who has a great matchup going up against Derrick Rose. The Rose fan club will tell you that he is still an MVP defender, but the numbers suggest otherwise, as opposing point guards score the 8th-most fantasy points per game against him. With Bradley Beal out, Wall produces more for his fantasy owners due to his increased usage rate. As is the case with Porter, Wall plays more minutes and scores more fantasy points when Gortat sits. In a high-scoring game, with few promising superstar plays on the slate, we consider John Wall to be a must-have tonight.
Jimmy Butler (DK: $8300 FD: $8700): Averaging 28.6 points and a 50.5 field goal percentage over his last five games, Jimmy Butler is our must-play at shooting guard tonight. Although Butler plays better with Rose out, we still expect him to hit value tonight against a struggling Wizards team who allows the 10th most points to shooting guards on the season, but third most with Bradley Beal out. Butler and Klay Thompson will likely be the most highly owned shooting guards tonight, but we consider Butler to be the stronger play as Thompson is very dependent on scoring points, while Butler procures his fantasy points from a wide variety of sources. Thompson has been shooting well lately which has caused his price to increase almost to the same level of Butler, despite averaging far fewer points on the season. With Beal out and Dwayne Wade questionable in the last game of the night, there aren’t many strong options at shooting guard other than Butler, solidifying him as a must-play.
