SOC | Must-Haves: MLS | 5/17/17

Haris Medunjanin (DK: $5,400): Our first Must-Have is the Union midfielder who is coming off a fantastic performance on Saturday where he put up 32 DK points. That has been an outlier performance, so we certainly can’t expect anything like that again. However, Philadelphia seems to have turned the corner. Haris has a monopoly over corners, so that bodes well for his future performances. The Union have won their last two games, are unbeaten in four, and get another home game here against a Houston team who are top of the Western Conference. However, that doesn’t tell the whole story, as they have only played three road games, losing them all while conceding eight goals in the process.  The great thing about Medunjanian is that his price hasn’t caught up to his performances, so for $5,400, double figures is a very solid return.  He has averaged two shots and more than seven crosses in his last three games. With that floor, any one of an assist or goal will put you well over double-digit DK points and set up your team nicely.  Medunjanian plays as the pivot player in midfield and dominates touches for the Union with 15 more than any over player in the last game and 15 more passes also.  It also helps his potential assist total that the Union has scored 10 times in their last four games, with Sapong having a prolific season so far.  We believe that by using Mudunjanin at his very low price you have a strong chance to get double value without an assist or goal, and with the Union’s strong form and Houston’s road woes there is a great chance to exceed that.

David Accam (DK: $8,600): The next Must-Have is the Ghanaian international forward who is one of the most explosive and exciting players in MLS. He was plagued by injuries last season but over the last two games, he showed a glimpse of his immense talent with two goals, two assists and seven shots. Accam also took two of the Fire’s three corners in the last game to help give him that added floor. Plus with his pace, he will always pick up his share of fouls drawn, as evidenced by the four in the last game.  Chicago earned an impressive 4-1 home win over Seattle in their last game, and have now won five of their six home games, drawing the other.  Next up is the visiting Colorado team who are at the bottom of the Western Conference, losing all four of their road games in the process. Chicago will be salivating over the opportunities they should get in this game. Accam’s price is at a reasonable point considering all the peripheral points he can pick up with shots, crosses and fouls drawn. His goal upside means he is probably slightly underpriced.  It also helps now that the Fire have a prolific goalscorer in Nikolic, so teams can no longer just focus on Accam. This also gives him an increased opportunity to pick up assists and the Fire have been one of the most improved attacking teams in MLS with 17 goals in their 10 games, with 12 of those coming in their five home games.  We believe that by using Accam you are taking a piece of the most heavily favored attack on the slate at a very fair price and with huge upside.  Accam has probably the biggest all around upside of any of the Fire players and can produce in multiple categories.
